school food standards consultation
Our Shared Goal
At Cool Milk, we support the government’s review of the School Food Standards. We want to work together to keep healthy dairy at the heart of the school day, making sure every child gets the fuel they need to grow and learn.
Breakfast Clubs & Primary Schools (Q10, Q13, Q17)
- Healthier Options: We fully support swapping out sugary juices and smoothies for lower-sugar alternatives to protect happy, healthy smiles.
- Classroom “Milk Moments”: Breakfast clubs are great, but they are optional. We would love to see a dedicated, mid-morning milk break in the classroom that bridges the gap from breakfast to lunch, so no child misses out on their daily calcium and protein.
- Fair Start for Reception: Let’s extend free milk to all children for their entire Reception year. Stopping free milk, the day a child turns five creates confusing gaps for families.
Secondary Schools (Q18, Q19, Q20)
- Keep Up Good Habits: Teenagers need strong bones and muscles too! Let’s make sure tasty, flavoured drinks don’t crowd out plain, nutritious milk.
- Time to Adjust: We support a gradual, phased rollout so schools and local suppliers have plenty of time to update their menus and budgets without any stress.
Nurseries, Standards & Keeping on Track (Q21, Q32, Q35, Q36)
- Proudly British Dairy: Real dairy milk is packed with natural goodness and supports our wonderful British farmers.
- Less Paperwork for Nurseries: Let’s cut the red tape for nursery staff so they can spend less time on forms and more time caring for toddlers.
- Teamwork and Transparency: Having a school governor look after food and putting the school food policy online keeps parents involved and informed.
Making it Happen (Q37, Q38, Q39, Q40)
- Loving Local: Buying milk from local British farms cuts down on food miles, protects our environment, and boosts rural communities.
- Helping Schools Succeed: The government can help schools shine by offering friendly toolkits, staff training, and extra funding for the transition.
- Inclusive & Fair: Better school standards support children from all backgrounds and close learning gaps. We just need to make sure kids with severe food allergies are safely looked after too.
